I dropped off my Prius for an oil change and a checkup in March of 2009. A black man gave me a ride home. We discussed the remarkable election of Barack Hussein Obama as president of the United States. I asked the black man driving me home how he liked having a black president. He frankly told me he liked the credit going to blacks, but he considered Barack Obama white.

Barack (Barry) Obama’s White History

Barack Hussein Obama was born on Aug. 4th 1961 in Honolulu Hawaii. He was affectionately called “Barry” as a child. Barry only lived with his African father for the first two years of his life and only saw him one other time in 1971.

However, Barry lived continuously with his white mother, Ann Dunham for six years in Hawaii. After Ann divorced Barack Obama Sr., she married Lolo Soetoro, a student from Indonesia. Ann moved with little “Barry” to Indonesia and give birth to his half-sister, Maya Soetoro. Lolo Soetoro was his step father and spent twice as much time with Barry than his biological father, Barack Obama Sr.

After spending four years with Lolo Soetoro as his step-father, Barry returned to Hawaii at the age of ten to live with his maternal white grandparents, Madelyn and Stanley Dunham. His mother, Ann Dunham, later returned to Hawaii to live with them.

Barry graduated from Punahou Academy in Hawaii in 1979. Barry spent his first eighteen years with his white mother, Ann Dunham or under her supervision.

Barry lived with his white grandparents from the age of 10 to 18. His white grandparents were his role models along with his white mother. The African side of him only influenced his growing up years for the first two years and then Barry was abandoned by his biological African father.

When Barack Hussein Obama entered Occidental College in Los Angeles, California he came from a white home and a white upbringing. After graduating from Columbia University with a degree in Political Science in 1983, Barack worked for Business International and MYPIRG. In 1985 he moved to Chicago and worked as a community organizer for ACORN.

In a world where “white man” is considered a dirty word by the liberal left, Barack Obama has allowed himself to be called African American.

Africans see African American’s as WHITE

However, in many countries in Africa, he would be called white. Having lived as a diplomatic spouse for three years in the Ivory Coast and two years in Mali, I have seen how unaccepted the African American is by black Africans. To the Africans I knew for five years, African Americans were white. They were not accepted as “brothers” because of their color. To Africans, African Americans were only another shade of white and lumped into the white race.

Barack Hussein Obama is a shade of white. He came from a white upbringing. He had a white mother and white grandparents who raised him.

Because it works for him politically, he allows others to refer to him as African American.

So stop the false cry of RACISM liberal left! Obama’s white and that’s that!

Race is a very tricky entity. It seems you are writing from a place of white privilege if you believe you understand and can automatically speak on the complexities of race and Blackness. Who gave you the authority to speak on how Africans relate to Black Americans? Where and who are your sources (beyond this one "black friend")?

In Addition, you need to study the history of race (a social construct) in America as it pertains to who is classified as Black to improve this dialogue. Americans are not far removed from the One drop rule/Hypodescent where one drop of black blood made one racially categorized as Black which may explain why some Americans view Obama as Black although others view Obama as biracial/mixed and some white.

Lastly, his upbringing would most likely be roughly considered middle class, not white. His experience is not connected to race as there are many Black, Asian, Latino, etc people raised with the same values. In Addition, many Black, Asian, Latino, etc (monoracial) children have and are currently being adopted by white parents and have the same upbringing as Obama but are not white.

**I anticipate the uniformed to hurl racist, bigoted epithets; I just want to put this information out there for those who are open to receiving Obama's racial classification in a sociological context. Have a good one!!**
